2020

  • Safiya and Welling met each other in the depths of the pandemic. While they both enjoyed dining together in outdoor “streaterys,” they spent time plenty of time at home playing Catan and eating hotpot.

2021

  • Safiya enjoyed tropical flowers and dinner at Masseria on their first Valentine’s Day together, a holiday which Wellington begrudgingly participates in.

  • Safiya moved into her first studio apartment in the spring of ‘21, with the help of the Honda fit. Beautiful sunsets and dinner parties ensue.

  • Safiya visits Hawaii for the first time. She is wowed by the sushi and tiny cars. They travel to Kauai for the weekend, hike the Napali coast and make lei po’o.

  • Safiya insists that they carve pumpkins together. Long cat (and carving tradition) is born.

2022

  • After a couple of ski lessons, Safiya is ready to hit the slopes at Mt. Rose, Wellington’s home mountain in North Lake Tahoe.

  • S+W meet up with friends in one of Wellington’s favorite places, Bend, Oregon. Safiya practices her powder skiing, and they do some outdoor climbing at Smith Rock.

  • S+W travel to France on the trip of a lifetime with W’s parents. While there, they saw a French harpist perform and dined at world renowned restaurants like Le Pic and Paul Bocuse. They toured around Paris, Lyon, and Aix En Provence.

  • W takes another trip to Hawaii this year for work and S comes along. This time, they take a weekend trip to Molokai. They paint coconuts, walk deserted beaches, and have an encounter with a wild boar.

  • S+W spend an exciting morning at Exiles bar in D.C. watching W’s favorite team, USMNT, play the Netherlands in the world cup. They unfortunately lost this match, but S goes on to watch the Netherlands play in Amsterdam when she visits later that year.

  • This year, after playing 70+ hours of Animal Crossing, S+W carve K.K. Slider on their pumpkin.

2023

  • With more time in Tahoe and a few local trips, S can confidently ski trees and is starting to get the swing of powder skiing. She’s able to ski The Chutes, Mt Rose’s double black terrain, for the first time this trip.

  • S accompanies W to a wedding in New Orleans and they spend a weekend eating delicious food and hanging out with Mississippi friends. S develops a greater appreciation for the region.

  • In the spring, S+W start sailing lessons on the Potomac River, a Christmas gift from S. They spend many beautiful mornings on the river.

  • S+W pack for their Hawaii move. They first pack a container of items to ship, before emptying out W’s condo of 18 yrs to sell.

  • S+W drive cross-country! They stopped in Mississippi before continuing on to Austin TX, Marfa TX, Santa Fe NM, Pagosa Springs CO, Monument Valley (Navajo), and finally landing in North Lake Tahoe where they spent the ski season.

  • S+W set up in Tahoe for the rest of the ski season. W tests out new back country gear. The season was slow to start, and they spent a lot of days with wind holds.

2024

  • S+W lived in Tahoe from November of 23 through May of 24. They skiied 54 days between Mt Rose, Diamond Peak, Palisades, and the back country. They spent a decent amount of time exploring Chickadee Ridge, a local peak with a thriving chickadee population.

  • S+W drive to meet their friends in Bend, Oregon. They take the scenic route back, stopping in Mt. Hood, Portland, the Redwoods, and Mt. Shasta.

  • In May, S+W move to Honolulu. They unpacked their shipping container from D.C. and were thrilled to find that nothing broke!

  • S+W set out on a catamaran along with friends for Saf’s birthday. Rachel, her close friend from the mainland, was there to celebrate too. W grilled steak and fish on the boat, and S made a tray of mac and cheese.

    To top it all off, W chose the backdrop Diamond Head to propose to S. She said yes!
